PRACTICAL TOOL GUIDE

Extract Text from a Digital or Scanned PDF

Two PDFs can look almost identical while storing their pages differently. One may contain selectable characters; the other may contain only page images. The correct text-extraction workflow depends on what is inside the file.

Check whether the page contains real text

Try selecting a sentence in a PDF viewer. A useful text layer often lets you select words, although some documents still have incomplete or unusual character mappings. A page that is only a scanned image needs recognition from pixels. One file can contain both kinds of page.

Extract the existing text layer first

Choose PDF to Text for a digital document. Select the pages you need, inspect the output and compare it with the original. Plain text does not preserve every table, column or visual relationship. A page without extracted text should be checked separately rather than silently omitted from your work.

Use image OCR for scanned pages

For an image-only page, first use PDF to JPG to render the needed page. Open that result in Image to Text and choose the text language. This manual sequence lets you review a page before recognition. The first PDF to Text release does not automatically OCR scanned pages.

Compare the two original Word exports

The sample-word-output.pdf file contains page images from our Word to PDF direct download. The sample-word-print.pdf file was made using the browser print path and contains selectable text in the original sample. The files show why a .pdf extension alone does not tell you whether text extraction will work.

Keep the output’s purpose clear

TXT is useful for searching, copying or editing words. It is not a layout-preserving PDF-to-Word conversion. If the extracted text is important, review page boundaries, names and figures, keep the original PDF, and use only documents you are authorized to process.
